FOLK

The slackness in my limbs was heaven. The loose, liquid sensation in my joints. I put a lot of effort into feeling healthy, but I couldn’t remember ever feeling as good as I did leaving Decoy’s house.

I followed his car to the compound, tail-gunning for no real reason other than I wanted to.

When we got there, he pulled into the car park in front of the sales building, and I kept going, rolling my Fat Boy all the way around the back, to where I knew I’d find River O’Brian.

He came out to meet me, hair wild, oil on his face. But his demeanour was calm. Steady. Like it was most days now he felt safe in the arms of his family again. “Come to check up on me?”

“Not today.” I engaged the kickstand and dismounted. “I need a favour.”

River’s gaze sharpened. I was his sponsor. As a rule, our relationship was him coming to me, not the other way round. “What is it? You having a bad day?”

“It’s not about that. I need you to do something for me and keep it to yourself.”

“Do I have to kill someone?”

“Not today.” I glanced around, but only his mechanic, Bear, was in the near vicinity, and he wasn’t paying attention. “It’s Decoy’s ex. I need you to crock her car so she can’t take Ivy from school before he gets there.”

River relaxed. “Fuck. Is that it? I thought you wanted help burying a body.”

“You’d have said no?”

“Yeah. Loudly. You know I’m not about that life, bro.”

I did. And I respected River’s commitment to a better life more than he knew. “Can you do it now?”

River wiped his messy hands down his T-shirt. “On it. Ping me a postcode.”

“Thanks. I appreciate it.”

“Anything you need, brother. But if Rubi asks where I’m going, I’ll tell him. We don’t keep shit from each other.”

I nodded my agreement. “Just not Decoy, okay? He doesn’t need anything else to worry about.”

River didn’t ask why I couldn’t fix it myself. Or why Decoy’s state of mind was my concern all of a sudden. In that, he was a different man to the love of his life, and in this moment, I appreciated that too.

He fist-bumped my shoulder and walked away while I sent him a location pin. A minute later, a bike rumbled to life and roared away, leaving me with my thoughts and the distinct sensation of someone behind me.

I spun around.

Alexei smirked. “Veles, you look like a man who is up to mischief.”

“This is how I always look.”

“Not true. Is why you are my favourite accomplice.”

“Your favourite?”

“Okay.” Alexei conceded. “Maybe not my favourite, but your appeal is a long way from the look on your face now.”

Alexei was a clever man. I’d spent years training to conceal my intentions. My emotions. But he saw right through me all the same.

“It’s not mischief. Just something I couldn’t do myself.”

“You could not ask me?”

Nope. Alexei was the obvious choice for a clandestine sabotage operation, but I knew him as well as he knew me, and I couldn’t be sure he wouldn’t kill the target.
